Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to acquire more in-depth knowledge within literary studies, with a special focus on narrative techniques, narratology and related fields. The course also provides enhanced insights regarding English-language literature as well as writing in English within literary studies.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- define and describe core concepts within narratology and related fields
- read, analyze and discuss literary theory and literary criticism within narratology
- apply narratology and methods within literary studies to the analysis of works of literature
- plan and write an argumentative essay supported by narrative theory
Course content
- British and North American works of literature belonging to different genres
- literary theory and literary criticism within narratology and related fields
Specific requirements
90 credits English, of which 22.5 credits with progressive specialization in literature, and of these 7.5 credits must be from English 3, or equivalent. In addition, Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3 and English course 6 or English level 2 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3.
Examination
MUN1, Oral examination, 1 credit, individual oral examination concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL3, Assignment, 4 credits, individual essay concerning learning outcome 4, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL4, Assignment, 2.5 credits, individual course portfolio of written and spoken seminar assignments concerning learning outcomes 1-4, grades Fail (U), or Pass (G).
For Pass with distinction on the course as a whole, the student must have earned that grade for MUN1 and INL3.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.
