Objectives
The purpose of the course is to contribute to a deepened and critical understanding of the significance of NGOs and civil society as arenas for organisation, action, and change in a local and global context. Through this focus, perspectives on the complex societal context in which companies operate are broadened and deepened. An important aspect is the ability to, from an interdisciplinary standpoint, analyse different ideas, interests, movements, and rationalities in a world characterised by increasing uncertainty and contradictions.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- Demonstrate an understanding of the evolution and diversity of NGOs and civil society organisations from both local and global perspectives.
- Critically assess leading theories explaining the function and significance of civil society.
Skills and abilities - Analyse and interpret the role and ideas, strategies and activities of NGOs drawing upon case studies using theoretical and empirical approaches.
- Engage in well-informed, critical and reflective debate on contemporary issues and real-world problems in relation to NGOs and civil society.
Evaluation ability and approach - Critically assess the ethical and societal implications of different interests and policies within the studied area.
- Formulate research-based arguments and ideas aligning with high academic standards of analytical depths, trustworthiness and relevance.
Course content
This course explores the emergence, roles, and impacts of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and civil society in contemporary societies and as a context for corporations. It examines the theoretical underpinnings of civil society, the organisational dynamics of NGOs, and their influence on governance, advocacy, development, and social change. Through critical readings, case studies, and interactive discussions, students will gain a nuanced understanding of the sector’s complexities and its relevance in global and local contexts.
Specific requirements
A completed Bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to at least 180 credits and with a major in the field of Business Administration. In addition Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3 and English course 6 or English level 2 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3.

INL1, Written Assignment, 4 credits, Grades: Excellent (A), Very Good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Fail with possibility of complementary work (Fx), Fail (F)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.
