Objectives
The aim of this course is to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in sustainable construction practices and building engineering, with a focus on material selection, safety integration, and modern construction techniques. The course will deal with the transition in the construction sector with focus on sustainability and technology development. Students will learn about various advanced approaches in achieving sustainability in building engineering, from material selection to advanced construction and renovation techniques. Additionally, the course will address current challenges, opportunities, and barriers in achieving sustainability in the construction industry, empowering students to identify problems and propose effective solutions.

- Appy different innovative approaches in achieving sustainability in building engineering and explain the differences compared to traditional method
- Evaluate existing structures from a sustainability perspective and suggest necessary measures for adaptation

Course content
The course begins with an introduction to sustainability in building engineering, emphasizing the importance of durability, safety, structural performance, and energy efficiency. It will then explore material properties of different building materials, innovative construction techniques, and the circular economy concept through different innovative methods such as prefabrication, modular construction, digital fabrication and adaptive utilization and reuse techniques, covering essential topics to promote sustainability in the construction sector. Students will utilize their gained knowledge in the final project.
Specific requirements
At least 150 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits in building technology, structural engineering, civil engineering, energy engineering or equivalent. In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
