Probability and statistics : a course for physicists and engineers
Objectives
The purpose of the course is to increase the students' knowledge in the field of applied statistics. The course will illustrate how to reach statistically justified conclusions based on common statistical methods, such as statistical inference, analysis of variance, correlation and regression. The course will provide opportunities to become familiar with the concepts of understanding statistics and challenging assumptions.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Discuss the role of statistics in engineering and science
- Explain various specific situations where statistical inference may commonly occur
- Implement and interpret confidence intervals and significance tests
- Explain situations in which the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is appropriate and implement and interpret one-way ANOVA
- Perform and interpret correlations and simple linear regressions
- Discuss and evaluate the importance of statistics in relation to sustainable development.
Course content
The course will mainly address the following:
Statistical thinking and understanding; statistical significance; statistical inference; correlation and linear regression; analysis of variance (ANOVA)
Specific requirements
120 credits of which 90 credits engineering and/or natural science and 7.5 credits in mathematics. In addition, Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3 and English course 6 or English level 2 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3.
