Objectives
The aim of the course is for the student to develop the ability to plan, perform and present an independent work (degree project). The aim is also to deepen student's ability to critical thinking and analysis. The independent work is an introduction to a real research- or development work within a specific area.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student shall be able to:
- systematically integrate knowledge within computer science development and industrial engineering and management acquired during the study program,
- demonstrate advanced knowledge in computer science including knowledge within research and development within the research field of the thesis,
- identify and use adequate methods to implement and verify solutions,
- critically and independently identify, formulate and handle complex issues and limited information,
- independently present the "State-of-the-art" and "State-of-practice" in the field of the project,
- plan and, based on research methods and engineering methods perform a complex degree project within given framework,
- orally, in writing and visually express arguments in a factual, linguistically accurate and credible way,
- communicate the conclusions and contributions of the project to individuals and groups both inside and outside the School,
- independently carry out a scientific opposition of others project's conclusions and contribution in a critical way and
- make judgments with respect to scientific, social, ethical and sustainability aspects as well as show knowledge about ethical aspect on research, and development work.
Course content
The course consists mainly of an independent thesis project focused on computer science and Industrial engineering and management. The course includes a project based on a scientific perspective, and the writing of a project report and an oral presentation of the conclusions and contributions of the project. In addition to the independent work the student will perform an oral opposition on another project.
Specific requirements
210 credits of completed courses, including 60 credits in computer science, 52,5 credits in industrial engineering and 15 credits at advanced level and Scientific research method for Industrial engineering and management 7,5 credits. In addition Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3 and English course 6 or English level 2 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3.
Examination
Project (PRO1), Completion of the project and written thesis report, 26 credits, examines the learning outcomes 1-10, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
Seminar (SEM1), Oral presentation of the approved thesis, 3 credits, examines the learning outcomes 7 and 8, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
Written assignment (INL1), Oral and written opposition to another thesis, 1 credit, examines the learning outcome 9, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.
