Objectives
The course aims to give the student a basic understanding of the design process in product development. The student develops a basic understanding of design methods and design tools and how they are practically applied.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
1. Describe and explain the design process and its content
2. Apply the design process
3. Describe and apply basic design methods
4. Use design tools for visualization and communication
5. Demonstrate an understanding of user-centered and sustainable design
6. Report their work both orally and in writing
Course content
The different phases of the design process, from needs identification and ideation to conceptualization, prototype development, and final evaluation.
Core design methods such as brainstorming, sketching, concept generation, and selection techniques to systematically develop and evaluate product ideas.
Tools for design and visualization, including CAD software and basic prototyping techniques, to create and communicate design concepts.
User-centered design, sustainable design, ergonomics, color and form and semiotics.

Examination
Written assignment (INL1), A continuously reported assignment according to instructions, 4.5 credits, examines learning outcomes 2, 3, 4, and 6, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Written examination (TEN1), 3 credits, examines learning outcomes 1, 3, and 5, marks Fail (U), 3, 4, or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
