Objectives
The course aims to develop a deeper understanding of management of industrial change processes and to increase the students' theoretical and practical knowledge on the field of change management.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
1. Plan change work by applying relevant methods
2. Identify and critically discuss how the understanding of and the implementation of change work is affected by the theoretical concepts and models in the change management literature
3. Critically discuss and problematize the practice 'change management', including ethical dimensions
4. Describe and critically discuss industrial change work and the management of industrial transformation pressure in a historical perspective focusing on factors such as climate change, globalization and digitalization.
Course content
The content of the course is summarized as follows:
- What is change?
- Basic terminology
- What needs drive change work?
- Change work in perspective - past, present, future
- Models of change - the individual, the group, the organization
- How organizational change can be analyzed
- Change management in practice - planning, organizing, leading, managing and finalizing
- Problematizing change management as practice
Specific requirements
120 credits within the MSc programme in Industrial Economics, which includes 30 credits within the subject "industrial engineering and management", or comparable. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
