Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge about the role of consultants and practices of business development and communication. The purpose of the course is also to prepare students for third-cycle studies or a career in the consulting business.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of critical and practical approaches to theories, models and concepts related to business development.
2. Develop awareness and understanding about the professional roles of management consultants.
Skills and abilities
3. Analyze business operations and suggest solutions to business problems.
4. Communicate results and formulate recommendations.
5. Independently carry out studies, where the student takes an active role in all elements of the course and is expected to take responsibility for his/her own studies.
Evaluation ability and approach
6. Demonstrate ability to select and apply scientific concepts in the course work.
7. Critically evaluate the role of consultant, as well as, recommendations related to business development.
Course content
The course focuses on the consultant role internationally and consultants' work with business development and communication. The students will apply both theoretical and practical perspectives. The course offers an option to either carry out an internship or in-depth theoretical studies.
When choosing the internship track, you must find a suitable firm yourself. During your internship you will write an independent assignment. If selecting the theoretical track, you will also independently write an assignment.
Specific requirements
A completed Bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to at least 180 credits and with a major in the field of Business Administration. A TOEFL test result, with a minimum score 575 with a TWE score of at least 4.5 (PBT) or 90 with a TWE score of at least 20 (iBT), or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of at least 6.5 and no band score below 5.5, or equivalent is required.
In addition, at least 30 ECTS credits from completed courses in business administration at advanced level. Among completed courses, at least 7,5 ECTS credits at advanced level must refer to studies in scientific method in business administration.
Examination
Seminar (SEM1) 2 credits. Grade: Pass (G) or Fail (U). Learning outcome: 1, 2, 5 and 6.
Project (PRO1) 1,5 credits. Grade: Pass (G) or Fail (U). Learning outcome: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Project (PRO2) 4 credits. Grade: Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F) Learning outcome: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Internship track:
Assignment (INL1) 7,5 credits.Grade: Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F) Learning outcome:1, 2, 5 and 6.
Theoretical track:

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
