Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide students with an in-depth introduction to the field of innovation and design. In addition, students are trained in understanding and reflecting on how innovation and design is related to organizational and societal challenges. Another objective is for students to acquire the ability to formulate their individual focus within the field of innovation and design.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. use key concepts from the area of innovation and design
2. compare challenges in different developmental phases of innovation and design
3. independently formulate a research focus and carry out a literature review based on defined challenge within innovation and design
4. discuss and problematise research and practice regarding value in innovation and design from perspectives of ethics and sustainability
Course content
Key concepts in field of innovation and design are introduced and discussed in lectures, seminars and workshops. The course place specific focus on the different challenges in the innovation and design process stages, and how they change over time. In addition, value, ethics and sustainability is discussed with regards to the relation between innovation and design and the impact on society and organizations. In the course, students formulate their individual focus within innovation and design, and expand their area of interest through a literature review.

Specific requirements
A completed Bachelor´s degree, equivalent to 140 credits. In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
Written assignment (INL2), 5 credits, (examines the learning outcomes 1 and 2), marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG)
Memorandum (PM02), 6 credits, (examines the learning outcomes 1 and 3), marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG)
Group assignment (GRU2), 4 credits, (examines the learning outcome 4), marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
