Course syllabus - Interaction and Extended Reality (XR)

Objectives

The course aims to give the student knowledge in different fields of extended reality (XR) in order to meet challenges and goals in the context of society and organizations. The course also aims to include knowledge about artificial Intelligence (AI).

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to: 
1. Describe and apply the theoretical concepts of extended reality (XR)  
2. Use appropriate tools for developing xR applications and services 
3. Evaluate the user experience of an extended realities (XR) application and services 
4. Design a usable working prototype for an extended realities (XR) application and service 
5. Discuss extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of information design goals and challenges for society and organizations

Course content

In this course, we will explore the very many opportunities provided by XR and AI and their potential when designing for all the senses in the domain of information design. The course provides design guidelines and evaluation principles using a wide range of perceptual models with different devices to describe the immersive experience. It aims to highlight how the use of these technologies could contribute to human wellbeing and address some sustainable world challenges.

Specific requirements

45 credits of completed courses in information design, of which 22,5 credits from specialization courses and 22.5 credits from general information design.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
