Objectives
The course aims to give the student basic knowledge of scientific theory, research methodology, and ethics, in order to be able to work scientifically in her/his studies. The course also aims to introduce study techniques and project methods as well as basic ability to work scientifically with derivation and documentation aimed at the education the student is admitted to.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. explain the parts of the research process, research problems, method choice and reporting,
2. describe basic research methods common in technology and natural science,
3. explain ethical considerations in research,
4. present an actual area within her/his field of study, regarding research status, method and ethical considerations,
5. independently search for literature in scientific databases, as well as
6. apply correct written language and follow a reference system.
Course content
Exploration in scientific databases, research methods, project methods, study techniques, problem formulation, literature study on research in the field of education and presentation of at least two different methods and at least two ethical problems, reference management, research theory and science.
Requirements
Basic eligibility and Physics 2, Chemistry 1, Mathematics 4 or Mathematics E
Examination
Seminar (SEM1), A seminar series where the assigned learning outcomes are demonstrated, 3 credits, examines the learning outcomes 1-3, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Written assignment (INL1), An assignment that is presented with a report and a demonstration of the project, 4,5 credits, examines the learning outcomes 4-6, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board.
