Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide specialised theoretical knowledge and refine practical skills linked to usability. This is done by planning, project management, performing and evaluating a number of iterations in information design projects with a focus on users and interaction.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. link and discuss the concepts of usability and accessibility from an ethical and sustainable viewpoint
2. identify, categorise and evaluate the needs of users in an interactive situation
3. plan phases and iterations of an interaction design project, also from a project management perspective, with the aim of achieving usability and accessibility
4. design interactive hi-fi prototypes to be analysed, evaluated and critically reviewed based on usability guidelines
5. reflect on their own design choices within the scope of selected media and completed design based on usability and accessibility principles with an ethical and sustainable viewpoint
Course content
The course uses mentorship and includes project work in interaction design where different phases of the project will be conducted through design sprints, with the aim of creating a design proposal having a particular focus on usability. The design proposals will be evaluated in different types of prototypes and reviewed, analysed and discussed in relation to how well they are adapted to users' needs and usability principles.
Specific requirements
60 credits from completed courses in Information Design, of which 30 credits are from specialisation courses and 30 credits from general information design courses.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
