Objectives
The objective of the course is for the student independently to be able to plan, carry out, analyse and present an in-depth scientific work within a problem area of public health sciences.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
1. demonstrate theoretical knowledge and understanding of the field of public health sciences, which embraces an interdisciplinary overview of the area as well as in-depth knowledge within the chosen area
2. independently identify and formulate a research question in public health sciences related to scientific literature
3. search for, analyse and critically review, contrast, integrate and evaluate previous research within the chosen area
4. identify, describe and apply scientific methods relevant to the area of research for collecting, processing and analysing data, also including identifying and managing ethical questions
5. present the results of scientific work
6. orally account for and discuss scientific work, and also critically and constructively review other people's scientific work
Course content
The course participants will independently choose an in-depth project in an area of their own choice within the field of public health sciences, based on literature search (within peer-reviewed literature).
Based on this literature search, the course participants will independently formulate an objective and research question as well as plan, carry out and present an in-depth scientific work of relevance to the area of public health sciences.
The course participants will also in their independent work reflect on researchers' and researching ethics.
The course participants will present their work orally and in writing, and also review, evaluate and serve as a student reviewer of other course participants' degree projects.
Specific requirements
Degree at the bachelor's level in Public Health Sciences, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Caring Sciences or equivalent education or a degree from abroad, and degree project of at least 15 credits at advanced level in the main field of study and scientific method 15 credits at advanced level or equivalent. In addition Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English B/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
EXA1, Degree project, 15 credits. Marks Fail (U), Pass (G) and Pass with Distinction (VG).
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
