Objectives
The course aims to create basic understanding of the People's Republic of China's political system as well as the country's global impact.
The course strives to enable critical reflection on how China exercises its international influence. We do this by asking questions such as: What are the main features of China's foreign policy? How do Chinese investment affect the labor markets in Sweden and Europe? What consequences do Chinese influence operations have on democracy, diversity and gender equality in the Nordic region?
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
1. Explain the central parts of the structure of the Chinese party state
2. Explain key concepts in Chinese foreign policy and China's international economic activities.
Skills and abilities
3. Identify and analyze how different China-related issues relate to each other.
4. Gather, evaluate and use relevant sources as basis for a written analysis of a specific issue related to China's global influence.
5. Demonstrate skills in academic writing and good language presentation.
Ability to evaluate
6. Critically reflect on various theories that can be used to investigate China-related issues.
7. Critically reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of material that can be used to answer China-related questions.
Course content
The course revolves around three tracks.
(1) In the first track, China's political and economic system, is discussed.
(2) In the second track, China's foreign policy and global influence is examined.
(3) In the third track, students are trained to independently analyze any question related to China's global influence.
Tuition
Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, seminars and written examinations.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
