Objectives
The course provides basic knowledge and creates an understanding of the modern view of quality work with a focus on quality development and its connection to sustainability. It provides the ability to drive continuous improvement in accordance with the tools and models of modern quality development with knowledge of statistical variation, statistical process control and design of experience.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
1. describe the concepts of quality, quality control, quality assurance and what is meant by "Total Quality Management" (TQM) and its connection to sustainability
2. conduct an improvement project with quality development methods and tools
3. apply the 7 QC tools and the 7 QM tools
4. apply Design of Experience (DoE) for optimization of a design or process
5.describe the concepts of reliability and operational reliability and be able to make simpler calculations, eg operational reliability of systems
6. calculate the fitness index for machines and processes

Examination
Written assignment (INL1), 5 credits, examines learning outcomes 2-4, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Written examination (TEN1), 2.5 credits, examines learning outcomes 1-6, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
