Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to acquire in-depth knowledge of current and future societal challenges and related research problems for equity, access and participation in health and welfare. Further, the objective of the course is for students to apply this knowledge within their main area of study.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student is expected to be able to:
1 analyse and contrast the concepts of equity, access and participation from different theoretical and ideological perspectives
2 analyse and critically discuss current research on equity, access and participation in relation to the student's main area of study
3 critically discuss policy documents for equity, access and participation within health and welfare
4 provide arguments for how research in the student's main area of study could contribute to meet societal challenges related to equity, access and participation
Course content
The meaning and definition of the concepts equity, access and participation
Ideological and theoretical perspectives on the concepts of equity, access and participation
Application of the concepts equity, access and participation in the various areas of study
Analyses of policy documents in the form of legal texts, national public health objectives and goal areas, and global goals for sustainable development, in relation equity, access and participation
Current and future societal challenges in relation to equity, access and participation in the health and welfare domain
Specific requirements
Management, teams and organisations in health and social welfare, or the equivalent.
Examination
INL1, Written assignment, 3 credits, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL2, Written assignment, 3 credits, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
SEM1, Seminar, 1,5 credits, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
