Objectives
The purpose of the course is for students to become familiar with English literature and literature analysis and the basic conventions for academic writing in a literary context.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students are expected to:
1. Conduct and discuss basic literary analyses using good written and spoken English
2. define and use relevant terminology and methods for basic literary analyses in good written and spoken English
3. apply basic conventions for academic writing in a literary context

Basic eligibility and English 6
Examination
OBN1, compulsory attendance, 1 credit, attendance at scheduled activities concerning learning outcomes 1-2, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL1, written assignment, 3.5 credits, concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN1, written examination, 3 credits, concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student must have earned that grade for INL1 and TEN1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

Interim Regulations and Other Regulations
In accordance with Regulations and Directions for Examination Matters at first and second cycle at Mälardalen University, students who have been registered on each course are offered three opportunities for retests (in addition to the regular retests that are scheduled within the framework of the course being given the last time) during the next two upcoming semesters after the course was given the last time. After the three examination sessions have been offered, the course will be discontinued.
