Objectives
The main goal of the course is to provide knowledge about the planning and implementation of industrialization activities and processes for manufacturing industry in order to increase the speed of production ramp-up. Through the course, students will gain knowledge on methods, tools, and strategies that are required to carry out an effective industrialization process for achieving a new product into full-scale production volume.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. Describe the industrialization process and various activities, methods and tools used to reduce disturbances, time-to-market, and time-to-volume.
2. Demonstrate skills in comparing and analyzing similarities and dissimilarities of different industrialization processes, activities, methods, and tools.
3. Demonstrate skills in describing various factors that affect industrialization, start of production, time-to-market, and ramp-up.
4. Demonstrate the ability to perform and relate a company's practical work to the theories of industrialization, production ramp-up and industry 4.0.
5. Analyze the limitations and opportunities for improvement of current industrialization process with regard to the potential of Industry 4.0 technologies.
Course content
* Industrialization and different perspectives
* Management of novelty in products and production systems
* Developing and implementing new production technologies and processes
* Manufacturing readiness level (MRL)
* Production ramp-up
* Managing feedback loops
* Suppliers collaboration in the industrialization
* Industry 4.0 or digital technologies for industrialization

Specific requirements
40 credits in engineering/technology and at least 2 years of work experience in full-time from relevant area within industry. In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.
Examination
Seminar (SEM1), 1 credit, examines the learning outcomes 1 and 2, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Project (PRO1), 2 credits, examines the learning outcomes 3 and 4, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Seminar (SEM2), 2 credits, examines the learning outcomes 4 and 5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
