A list of articles will be provided online on Canvas at the start of the course, no more than 500 pages. These articles are electronically accessible through the university library. A list of suggested books will also be provided of which the course participant chooses two.
Objectives
The purpose of the course is for the student to acquire knowledge of some of the theories and methodological approaches used to study the relationship between humans and other animals within the frame of the research field of human-animal studies.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students shall be able to:
1.define, apply and discuss central theoretical concepts in human-animal studies
2.demonstrate a deeper understanding of current discussions in the field of human-animal studies
3.reflect on the role of animals in contemporary society
Course content
The course gives an introduction to human-animal studies in social science and the humanities, with a focus on the role of animals in society. Several different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches within the field are dealt with during the course.
Specific requirements
Bachelor's degree in the Public Health Sciences, Caring Sciences with specialisation in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology or the equivalent. In addition Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English B/English 6 are required. For courses given in English, exemption is made from Swedish B/Swedish 3
Examination
INL1 Written assignment 5 credits, regarding learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG).
SEM1 Seminar 2.5 credits, active participation in seminars regarding learning outcomes ??; Fail (U) and Pass (G).
For a Pass with Distinction (VG) on the whole course a VG on INL1 is required
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
