Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge of how extraction and use of natural resources for energy transformation affects the environment and climate.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student shall be able to
1. Explain formation and occurrence of the most important natural resources for energy purposes.
2. Describe use of natural resources for energy transformation in Sweden and rest of the world.
3. Explain and describe the energy balance that includes supply, transformation, transmission and final use of energy.
4. Apply relevant calculations of resource utilization and energy demand
5. Critically assess and evaluate resource utilization and energy transformation and their influence on society and climate.
6. Discuss and illustrate the concept of sustainable development and how it relates to resource utilization and energy transformation
Course content
The course will mainly address the following:
Formation and occurrence of natural resources, energy transformation, energy use, environmental impacts and sustainable development

30 credits within an engineering prigram or within engineering/natural science
Examination
Examination (HEM1) 1,5 hp, grade 5, 4 or 3. (Learning outcome: 1, 2, 3, 4)

Project (PRO1) 3 hp grade 5, 4 or 3. (Learning outcome: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
