Course syllabus - Energy and Climate

Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge of climate change on global, regional and local levels, in relation to energy conversion.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. Define the concept of climate change
2. In detail explain processes that cause climate change
3. Describe consequences of climate changes
4. Provide examples of how different techniques for energy  conversion affect the climate
5. Describe and appraise different techniques applied to mitigate negative effects of energy  conversion on the climate
6. Calculate and quantify effects of technical mitigation techniques aimed to reduce impacts of energy  conversion on the climate
7. Relate future expected energy demands to potential consequences on the climate

Course content

The course will mainly address the following:
Climate change, physical and chemical processes related to atmosphere of earth, expected and actual consequences of climate change, greenhouse effect, global warming, effects of energy conversion on climate, CO2 and other pollutants, air quality, wet and dry deposition, mitigation techniques, carbon capture storage, emission control, and energy efficiency.

Examination

Examination (HEM1) 1,5 hp, grade 3, 4 or 5. (Learning outcome: 1, 2, 4, 5)
Assignment (INL1) 3 hp grade 3, 4 or 5. (Learning outcome: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Project (PRO1) 3 hp grade 3, 4 or 5. (Learning outcome: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
