Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge about the important aspects of the circular economy concept and where the challenges, barriers and limitation are. The focus is on how the concept of circular economy can contribute to solve current environmental challenges related to the use and waste management of important global resources. Mitigation measures will be analyzed and discussed regarding their environmental impact and circularity.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. Explain the concept of circular economy and understand its role for sustainable development.
2. Distinguish the concept of circular economy from other related schools of thought.
3. Compare and investigate different measures to reduce the impact of current environmental challenges related to the use and waste management of important global resources.
4. Evaluate the environmental impact and assess the circularity of proposed measures.
Course content
The course addresses the circular economy concept and its challenges, barriers and limitations in the context of environmental engineering. In addition, the course deals with how circular economy can contribute to solve current environmental challenges related to the use and waste management of important global resources.

Specific requirements
120 hp including 90 hp engineering and/or natural science. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course B/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
