Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide students with tools and methods to analyze issues related to globalization and international trade.

Learning outcomes

After completed course the student shall be able to
1. Understand the basics of trade policy and the economic effects of various trade policy instruments.
2. Use economic and trade theoretical methods, such as e.g. optimization and mathematical modeling, to analyze trade-related issues.
3. Use and distinguish explanatory models with different types of determinants ranging from classical (differences in labor productivity and relative factor availability) to modern trade theories (e.g. imperfect competition, regional differences). 
4. Independently acquire and critically relate to the content of scientific articles in the field of globalization and international trade

Course content

The following topics will be covered: Classical, neoclassical and more contemporary trade theories. Technology, factor abundance, comparative advantage, competitive advantage, partial and general equilibrium analysis, trade policy, intra-industry trade, foreign direct investments, gravity, international firms and international interactions will be addressed.

Tuition

A series of lectures integrated with demonstrations and exercises.

Specific requirements

60 credits, in Economics, with progression. Of theese, 45 credits must be completed at the beginning of the course and 15 credits must be at level G1F.
In addition, English course B/English course 6.
TOEFL test result, minimum score 213(CBT), 550(PBT) or 79(iBT) or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of minimum 6,0 and no band score below 5,0. The English test is COMPULSORY for all applicants except citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and USA.

Examination

Examination (TEN1), 6 hp, grade Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F) (learning outcomes 1-4)
Assignment (OVN1) 1,5 hp, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G) (learning outcomes 1-5)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
