Course syllabus - Simulation of Production Systems

Objectives

The aim of the course is the improvement of industrial processes that involve complex changes through the use of simulation.  
The objective of this course is to develop competence in the use of simulation through theoretical understanding, hands-on exercises, workshops and an improvement project of a production process.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. apply theoretical findings and reflect on the use of simulation for improving a real industrial production process 
2. design and build a simulation model of a production system using a systems perspective and applying the principles of data collection and analysis 
3. analyze different scenarios for the improvement of a production process with the use of a simulation model and document the results 
4. demonstrate the ability to individually and as a group member perform and present project and seminar assignments, both orally and in writing and to critically and constructively provide feedback on such presentations

Course content

- Simulation as a tool for improvement of production systems 
- The process of designing, building and experimenting with a simulation model 
- Application of the simulation process in a project of an industrial production system within the manufacturing industry, analysis of improvement scenarios and communication of the results

Specific requirements

40 credits in engineering/technology and at least 2 years of work experience in full-time from relevant area within industry. In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.

Examination

Seminar (SEM1), 0.5 credits, examines learning outcomes 1 and 4, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) 
Laboratory work (LAB1), 1 credits, examines learning outcomes 2 and 3, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) 
Project (PRO1), 3.5 credits, an assignment presented with a report and a demonstration of the project and simulation, examines learning outcomes 1-4, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
