Objectives
The aim of the course is for the student to develop the ability to plan, perform and present an independent work (degree project). The aim is also to deepen student's ability to critical thinking and analysis. The independent work is an introduction to a real research- or development work within a specific area.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. systematically integrate knowledge within product and process development and industrial engineering and management acquired during the study program
2. demonstrate advanced knowledge in product and process development including knowledge within research and development within the research field of the thesis
3. identify and use adequate methods to implement and verify solutions
4. critically and independently identify, formulate and handle complex issues and limited information
5. independently present the "State-of-the-art" and "State-of-practice" in the field of the project
6. plan based on research methods and engineering methods to perform a complex degree project within given framework
7. orally, in writing and visually express arguments in a factual, linguistically accurate and credible way
8. communicate the conclusions and contributions of the project to individuals and groups both inside and outside the school
9. independently carry out a scientific opposition of others project's conclusions and contribution in a critical way
10. make judgments with respect to scientific, social, ethical and sustainability aspects as well as show knowledge about ethical aspect on research, and development work
Course content
The course consists mainly of an independent thesis project focused on Product and process development and Industrial engineering and management. The course includes a project based on a scientific perspective, and the writing of a project report and an oral presentation of the conclusions and contributions of the project. In addition to the independent work the student will perform an oral opposition on another project.
Specific requirements
210 credits of completed courses, including 60 credits in product and process development, 52,5 credits in industrial engineering and 15 credits at advanced level and Scientific research method for Industrial engineering and management 7,5 credits. In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English, exemption is made from Swedish course.
Examination
Project (PRO1), completion of the project and written thesis report, 27 credits, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) (examines learning outcomes 1-10)
Seminar (SEM1), oral presentation of the approved thesis, 2 credits, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) (examines learning outcome 7 and 8)
Assignment (INL1), oral and written opposition to another thesis, 1 credit, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) (examines learning outcomes 9)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
