Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide the knowledge on infrastructure and technologies that are needed to generate, transport and managing data. The course will give the students an insight in different components included in IoT, such as sensor technologies, data communication and security. Moreover, the course will highlight practical aspects of the IoT infrastructures.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. describe and argue about basic concepts used in IoT infrastructures,
2. describe and evaluate IoT communication infrastructure including wire- and wireless communication and their possibilities and limitations,
3. explain the safety aspects of data communication and understand appropriate measures against common security issues,
4. understand how different sensor types can be used in different systems and know the characteristics of each type and
5. demonstrate the ability to practically and theoretically translate their knowledge within practical systems.
Course content
- Sensors and smart sensors
- Network protocols for IoT (Ethernet, WiFi, 5G, IP over wireless)
- IoT devices
- Security in communication
- Industrial IoT applications
Specific requirements
7,5 credits in programming and 7,5 credits in computer systems.
Examination
Written examination (TEN1), 3,0 credits, examines the learning outcomes 1-4, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5.
Laboratory work (LAB1), 4,5 credits, examines the learning outcome 5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
