Objectives
The course aims to illustrate intercultural competences and give the student´s knowledge about the meaning of their own cultural worldview and provide them with increased knowledge about how customs and worldviews affect the design and understanding of different interfaces. Furthermore, the course aims to contribute with knowledge of and understanding of how culture is created in relationships between individuals and systems, with a focus on gender and ethnicity.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
1. Use central concepts in culture and culture theories
2. Analyze culture as a product of social interaction with focus on gender, ethnicity and corporeality.
3. Recognize cultural dimensions of people's paradigms and popular culture
4. Discuss and analyze social constructs
5. Apply appropriate elements (dimensions) of cultural theory in the design and evaluation of interfaces
6. Discuss how culture creates and transforms peoples´ experiences
Course content
The course discusses culture from a micro and macro perspective in order to problematize how different customs and worldviews affect individual's perspective and understanding of the environment and its consequences related to the globalization. With both a theoretical and practical approach, the course explores and critically examines intercultural perspectives in relation to the design and use of communication technology in the field of interaction design. The course also deals with how intercultural perspectives relate to sustainable development in relation to sustainable environment and equality.

Examination
Group assignment (GRU1), 2,5 credits, examines learning outcomes 1 and 3, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Seminar (SEM1), 3 credits, examines learning outcomes 4 and 6, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Assignment (INL1), 2 credits, examines learning outcomes 2 and 5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
