ISBN: 9780134392073 LIBRIS-ID: 19697215
Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the student knowledge about how individuals interact with each other, objects and environments and about how usability may be supported by gamification, in order to engage, motivate and support behavior.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
1. Use game design theories as a way to gamify an information design problem
2. Analyse game mechanics and their function in relation to play activities
3. Construct and apply game mechanics that promote active play behaviour
4. Evaluate games with relevant methods for assessing the user experience
5. Describe and discuss game design theories
Course content
In the course we use gamification as a tool to develop services and products in the domain of information design. The course provides a conceptual knowledge of play as a social activity and its basic elements. It aims to provide students with the necessary tools to achieve the iterative process of game design from ideation to evaluating the gaming experience in digital and analog worlds.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
