Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge of water quality management and strategies, and water treatment technologies.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. Explain water quality management
2. Explain water cycle
3. Identify physical, chemical and biological aspects of water quality
4. Assess and quantify quality requirements for use of water
5. Explain and compare pollution sources, loadings and waste water characterization
6. Synthesize current technology available for waste water treatment and research and development status
7. Implement water quality modelling tools

Course content

The course will mainly address the following:
Water quality management, the water cycle, physical, chemical and biological aspects of water quality, quality requirements for use of water, pollution sources, loadings and waste water characterization, current technology available for waste water treatment and research and development status, and water quality modelling tools.

Specific requirements

Bachelor of Science in engineering or natural sciences, at least 180 credits or equivalent, including 7.5 credits in Mathematics and 7.5 credits within environmental engineering.  In addition Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English B/ English 6 are required. In cases where the course is given in English, exemption from the Swedish B/Swedish 3 is given.

Examination

Examination via computer (TEN1), 6 credits, grades 3, 4 or 5 (learning outcomes 1-7)
Assignment (INL1), 1,5 credits, grades 3, 4 or 5 (learning outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
