Objectives
The objective of the course is to offer a historical perspective on language. The course also offers broad and specialized studies in linguistics.
Learning outcomes
After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:
- define and use key concepts related to the study of human language, especially English
- describe and discuss key linguistic theories
Course content
- Introduction to a broad range of linguistic areas, with a focus on the English language
Tuition
The course offers conditions for both explicit and implicit learning. Teaching on the course consists of lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials and assignments, including a considerable ICT component. Active participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory.
Specific requirements
English 1, 30 credits (of which at least 22.5 credits passed at the start of the course), or the equivalent.
Examination
OBN1, Compulsory attendance, 0.5 credit, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
ÖVN1, Exercise, 0.5 credit, online tests, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
SEM2, Seminar, 1 credit, oral presentation, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL2, Written assignments, 1.5 credits, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN2, Written examination, 2 credits, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN3, Written examination, 2 credits, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a passing grade, the assignments must be written in English, with a high degree of correctness and an appropriate style.
For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student must have earned that grade for at least 5 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
