Objectives

The objective of the course is for students to acquire knowledge of the sound system, grammatical structures, and semantic relationships of the English language.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to
1. explain the core concepts in lexical semantics and the semantic relationships of words
2. describe the sound system of English using basic phonetic terminology
3. apply the International Phonetic Alphabet when reading and producing basic transcriptions
4. identify syntactic structures and apply relevant terminology in the analysis of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences

Tuition

Teaching and learning take place in English, in the form of lectures, seminars, and various kinds of exercises, and are partly based on ICT.

Examination

OBN1, Compulsory attendance, 1.5 credits, concerning learning outcomes 1-4, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
ÖVN1, Exercise, 2 credits, online exercises concerning learning outcomes 1-4, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
TEN2, Written examination, 2 credits, concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN3, Written examination, 2 credits, concerning learning outcome 4, grades Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG).

For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student must have earned that grade for TEN2 and TEN3.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
