Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide insight into the demands and challenges posed by competitive production in industrial production systems as well as knowledge and skills in its concepts, methods and techniques.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of competitive and sustainable production
2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic philosophy, strategies and principles for lean production
3. demonstrate ability to integrate, plan and implement a value-flow analysis of a production segment in an industrial activity
4. demonstrate the ability in group work to plan, implement and report a project assignment in writing as well as verbally and to provide feedback on such work
5. demonstrate ability to propose and compare various options for enhancing a production system section through the selection and application of methods and tools for continuous improvement

- Basic philosophy, strategies and principles for Lean production

Tuition
Teaching consists of lectures, exercises and supervision. Independent studies as well as industry-based improvement project in a group.
Specific requirements
Completed courses of at least 45 credits in Product and Process Development, of which at least 7 credits in production/ logistics/quality and at least 12 months of professional experience in industry or university studies in the field of engineering of at least 60 credits and at least 24 months of professional experience from technology in industrial production/logistics/quality.
In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.
Examination
Written assignment (INL1), 3,5 credits, examines the learning objectives 1-4, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
