Objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the use of quantitative measurement methods with a particular focus on measuring, analyzing and discussing different types of innovation capacity in society. The course deals with and challenges different methods for measuring innovation capacity and the relevance of the measurement result.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. account for key methodological concepts for the design of quantitative survey methods
2. apply basic knowledge for quantitative data collection and analysis
3. Analyze a data base with adequate methods for assessing innovation capacity
4. critically reflect on possibilities and limitations in various forms of measurement and analysis of the ability to innovate and the consequences of such measurements
5. in oral and written form, report and discuss the results with internal or external stakeholders
Course content
Introduction to quantitative survey methods.
Discuss the purpose of different methodologies and the relationship between them.
Innovation in society.
Established innovation measurement methods and innovation indexes.
Ethical aspects and other consequences of different measurement methods.
Report and present measurement results.
Tuition
Lectures, seminars, exercises and tutorials.
Specific requirements
Completed courses of at least 45 credits, of which at least 22.5 credits in the subject of Innovation Technology. In Innovation Technology, the following two courses must be completed:
Introduction to Innovation Technology 7.5 credits and Processing for Value Creation 7.5 credits.
Examination
Written assignment (INL1), Report Innovation Data, 3 credits, examines the learning objectives 1-5, Marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Written assignment (INL2), Essay Innovation debate, 3 credits, examines the learning objectives 4 and 5, Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Exercise (OVN1), 1,5 credits, examines the learning objectives 1-3, Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
