Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide, through theoretical studies and practical exercises, knowledge about behavioural science perspectives on leadership in general and staff management in particular.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- give an account of current theoretical perspectives on leadership and organization and to discuss these from a scientific and critical perspective
- compare the preconditions for different types of leadership
- give proof of their knowledge of men’s and women’s leadership, preconditions, behaviour and dynamics
- give an account of core concepts used in leadership research from a behavioural science perspective
- provide an overview of modern theorizing about leadership and culture
- formulate strategies for leadership as a behavioural practice on the basis of theories that regard leadership focusing on relations, change, situational or cultural leadership

Perspectives on leadership and organization
Leadership as a core aspect in organization research
Previous perspectives on organization and leadership, Human Relations and Human Resource
The background behind current leadership ideals, such as situational and cultural leadership, and leadership focusing on change
Comparison of preconditions for leadership when it comes to cooperation, communication and control
Practical leadership
Leadership and collegiality as a relationship, with a focus on conflict management, resistance and cultural leadership.

Teaching and learning take place in English and in the form of lectures, seminars, and different types of exercises,
Requirements
General entry requirements
Examination
SEM2, Seminar, 1.5 credits, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
TEN2, Written exam, 6 credits, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a VG on the course as a whole, a VG on TEN2 and a G on SEM2 is required. For more information consult the study guidelines.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
