Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to acquire enhanced knowledge of social care as an integral part of social work. Another objective is for students to search for current research and develop a multidimensional knowledge of the two traditional foci within social care: elderly people in need of assistance and people with disabilities.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:

1 give an account of and discuss theoretical perspectives on social care
2 describe and understand social care work regarding the elderly and people with disabilities
(competence and skills)
3 independently search for, compile and analyze results from current research within social care
4 discuss the differentiation of care throughout life, from childhood to old age, for people with disabilities
5 reflect upon the psycho-social and existential aspects of ageing in relation to the practices of aid assessment
(judgement and approach)
6 review and evaluate current legislation, guidelines and documentation systems for aid assessment in relation to care receivers’ and relatives’ views on the content and form of care
7 give proof of an ethically acceptable approach in possible dilemmas that social care professionals can face in interactions with care receivers, depending on differences in perspective and the scope of action
Course content
- concepts and theoretical perspectives regarding social care in relation to social work
- multidimensional perspectives on social care and different target groups, e.g. the organization of social care in relation to ageing in people with disabilities
- life course perspectives as an analytical method to understand ageing on the basis of societal and individual factors
- measuring and assessing physical, psychological, existential and social needs
- legislation, policies and guidelines in social care, regarding people with disabilities and elderly people in need of care interventions, as well as their relatives and friends
- the social worker’s scope of action when dealing with people entitled to social care interventions, as determined by the system and professional theories of the social services
- social care in Sweden and beyond – insights from comparative studies
Tuition
Teaching and learning take place in the form of interactive lectures, seminars and group exercises/work, as well as a field study. Through these different forms of learning, students are expected to train active searches for knowledge, critical reflection and enhanced discussion skills. Another aim of the teaching and learning methods is to promote a good climate for cooperation where the individual’s as well as the group’s responsibilities are respected.
Specific requirements
105 credits in Social Work or the equivalent. In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. In cases when the course is offered in English, the requirement for Swedish B/Swedish 3 is excluded.
Examination
GRU1, Group assignment, 1 credit: participation in a reflection group, personal and professional development; learning objectives 1-7; grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL2, Hand-in assignment, 2.5 credits: individual hand-in assignment; learning objectives 5-7; grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL3, Hand-in assignment, 2 credits: individual hand-in assignment; learning objectives 1-5; grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
NÄR1, Participation, 0,5 hp, at least 75% of the lectures and group exercises. Absence complemented according to specific instructions; grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
SEM1, Seminar, 1.5 credits: written and spoken group presentation; learning objectives 1-7; grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
For a VG on the course as a whole, a VG is required on INL2 and INL3, as well as a G on GRU1, NÄR1 and SEM1. For further information, see the study guidelines.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
