Course syllabus - Introduction to Industrial Engineering and Management

Objectives

The purpose with the course is to provide an introduction to Industrial engineering and management as a field, as well as to the entire program and its structure. The purpose is also to have the students develop an understanding of the work of engineers related to the development and management of complex systems and to start train the students in analysing these systems and identifying needs for change. Finally, the course also has as purpose to train the students to communicate their results of group work.

Learning outcomes

After completed course the student should be able to:
1. explain basic concepts used in the field of industrial engineering and management.
2. describe the work of engineers, in the past and in the present, in terms of conceiving, designing, implementing, and operating engineering systems and processes.
3. identify challenges and formulate needs for change at an organizational level in the development and management of complex value-added engineering systems and processes
4. describe and analyse the development and management of engineering systems and processes using basic concepts.
5. communicate effectively the results of group work to companies.

Course content

The course combines lectures that provide the students with tools to analyze complex systems with a group assignment focusing on a specific organization that is analyzed from an engineering-work perspective. The students are put in contact with the work of engineers through the group assignment but also via invited guests and maybe study trips. Each year a trend is identified (for instanceeg globalization, digitalization, etc.) and the needs for change in the operations based on such a trend are discussed. The course also contains a module focusing on how to present results orally.

Physics B, Chemistry A, Mathematics E or Physics 2, Chemistry 1, Mathematics 4.

Examination

Assignment (INL1), 2 credits, grade Pass (G) (learning outcome 1)
Group assignment (GRU1), 2,5 credits, grade Pass (G) (learning outcomes 2, 3)
Group assignment (GRU2), 0,5 credit, grade Pass (G) (learning outcomes 3, 5)
Examination (TEN1), 2,5 credits, grades 3, 4 eller 5 (learning outcome 4)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
