Objectives
This course provides advanced knowledge in one current challenge related to research and development in energy systems, energy efficiency, energy and/or environmental technical issues which also are related to research and development in the Future Energy research profile. The course will give a deeper understanding of, and practical application of theories and models for analysis and design of sustainable energy systems. The course will also develop students' individual abilities regarding written and oral presentations, critical analysis of information, planning and execution of a task under predetermined time.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to:
1. Apply and master the theories and models to solve one advanced energy and/or environmental engineering problem
2. Independently identify an advanced energy and/or environmental technical problem and the need for further knowledge in that field
3. Communicate and present findings and methods
4. Independently analyze and critically evaluate an energy process or well defined part of an energy system
5. Relate to current research and development activities for the studied problem
Course content
The advanced project work carried out in a current research project in Future Energy or in cooperation with industrial partner, containing current one research problem in the field. The project task contains one of the following elements: measurement / experiments and analysis of results, calculation / simulation / optimization and analysis of results, planning / design.
Tuition
Project work with supervision. The course uses a pedagogical (web based) platform for communication, discussion and presentation of course material.
Specific requirements
180 credits completed courses related to the research profile Future Energy (e.g. intelligent energy systems, renewable energy, power engineering, energy storage, energy markets, energy efficiency, efficient and smart buildings, biological processes related to renewable energy, simulation and optimisation of process industry). Alternative, completed the Project course in Energy and Environmental engineering (30 ECTS). In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English B/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
Project (PRO1), 13 credits, marks 3,4 or 5 (Course goal: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
Seminar (SEM1), 1 credit, marks Passed (G ), (Presentation of literature survey, detailed research questions and methodology; Course goals: 1, 2, 3, 5)
Seminar (SEM2), 1 credit, marks Passed (G), (Presentation of final report of research and development work; Course goal: 3, 4, 5)
Written report are included in the examination PRO1. Oral presentations and discussions during seminars.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
Grade
