Objectives
This course provides knowledge in a current challenges in energy systems, energy efficiency in processes and buildings, energy and/or environmental engineering issues which also are related to development projects in the Future Energy research profile. The course will give understanding of, and practical application of theories and models for analysis and design in the area. The course will also develop students' individual abilities regarding written and oral presentations, analysis of information, planning and execution of a task under predetermined time.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to:
1. Apply the theories and models to solve energy and/or environmental engineering problems which relates to Future Energy profile
2. In discussion with supervisors identify an energy and/or environmental engineering problem and need for further knowledge in the field
3. Communicate and present findings and methods
4. Analyze and critically evaluate an energy and/or environmental process or part of a system
5. Relate work to current development activities for the studied problems
Course content
The project work carried out within a development project in Future Energy or in cooperation with industrial partners, containing a relevant problem in related to the field of Future Energy. The project task contains one or more of the following elements: measurement / experiments and analysis of results, calculation / simulation / optimization and analysis of results, planning / design.
Tuition
Project work with supervision. The course uses a pedagogical (web based) platform for communication, discussion and presentation of course material.
Specific requirements
120 credits completed courses related to the research profile Future Energy (e.g. intelligent energy systems, renewable energy, power engineering, energy storage, energy markets, energy efficiency, efficient and smart buildings, biological processes related to renewable energy, simulation and optimisation of process industry), including 30 credits in mathematics/natural science courses. In addition, English course B/6 is required.
Examination
Project (PRO1), 25 credits, marks 3,4 or 5 (Course goal: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
