Objectives
The aim of the course is for students to develop their knowledge of and skills in English and language education in order for them to be able to teach English on the appropriate level, in accordance with the intentions expressed in the applicable regulatory documents. The course further aims to lay the foundations for a critical and reflective attitude in the students and the tools necessary for them to continually develop their role as a teacher.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
(with regard to the Language Skills module)
- apply basic grammatical rules, grammatical terminology and an idiomatic vocabulary in spoken and written English
- express themselves in a correct and idiomatic manner in spoken and written English
- use dictionaries and other language aids as tools for continued proficiency development
- give an account of general theories on language learning and teaching and how they are reflected in regulatory documents as well as teaching practice
(with regard to the Communication module)
- analyze the structure of texts, as well as to plan and produce coherent spoken and written English texts
- apply principles and conventions for proper source use
- understand advanced English non-fiction
- understand advanced spoken English in different contexts
- identify and describe significant phenomena in contemporary English-speaking societies
- give an account of pedagogical perspectives on spoken and written communication as well as practical applications in school
Course content
The course comprises two modules worth 7.5 credits each.
Module 1, Language Skills:
- practical English grammar
- knowledge of dictionaries and other language aids
- vocabulary knowledge from an extended perspective
- pronunciation and intonation
- language didactics
- regulatory documents
- field studies
Module 2, Communication:
- spoken and written communication
- culture and society in the English-speaking world
- pedagogical perspectives on spoken and written communication
- field studies
Tuition
The teaching and learning activities offer the preconditions for explicit as well implicit learning and include lectures, seminars, discussions, home assignments and tasks to be done by the students in class. Participation in all scheduled activities and assignments is mandatory. The course is partly based on ICT.

English B, Modern language step 3 or Modern language 3.
Examination
SEM1, 1 credits, Language skills. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled activities and field studies, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
SEM2, 1.5 credits, Communication. Preparation for and active participation in scheduled activities and field studies, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL1, 3 Credits, Language Skills. Spoken and written assignments, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL3, 4 credits, Communication. Spoken and written assignments, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN1, 3.5 credits, Language Skills. Written exam, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN3, 2 credits. Communication. Written exam, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student needs to have earned that mark for a minimum of 8.5 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
