Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to develop their communicative competence in spoken and written English. The course also offers transferable knowledge of the culture and society of the English-speaking world.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to
- analyze the structure of texts and plan and produce coherent texts in spoken and written English
- apply principles and conventions for good source use
- read advanced English non-fiction
- demonstrate a high degree of understanding of spoken English in a variety of contexts
- identify and describe central themes in the contemporary English-speaking world

Tuition
The course provides both explicit teaching and the preconditions for incidental learning. Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, discussions, assignments and tasks during class time. Participation in all scheduled teaching is mandatory. Teaching on the course is partially ICT-based.
Requirements
English B or English 6.
Examination
SEM1, Seminar, 1.5 credits, preparation for and participation in scheduled activities, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL2, Assignment, 4 credits, Spoken and written assignments, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN2, Examination, 2 credits, Exam, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student must have earned that mark for INL2 and TEN2.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
