Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of the concept of "Industrial Excellence” with respect to what it means and how to contribute to industrial excellence by linking manufacturing strategy to the development of the production system. The objective in the course is to perform an improvement study of a real industrial production process by using discrete event simulation for modeling and simulation of current process and suggested improvements.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student shall be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge and explain how effective development of production systems contribute to achieving industrial excellence
2. demonstrate knowledge and describe how production strategies affect the development of production systems
3. demonstrate knowledge and in detail describe the development of production systems and some commonly applied methods
4. demonstrate an understanding of how simulation can be used in the development of production systems
5. demonstrate the ability to model, simulate, predict and evaluate events, even with limited information
6. demonstrate the ability to individually search and select scientific publications through an appropriate and systematic strategy and to critically examine and evaluate these publications.
7. show good ability to implement and written and oral presentation of a project work both individually and in groups.
8. emonstrate ability to evaluate the results of a simulation study, and describe and identify the improvements that are appropriate
Course content
- Introduction to manufacturing strategies
- The link between manufacturing strategy and production system development
- Development of production systems
- Modelling and simulation as tools with focus on discrete event controlled simulation.
- Performing of applied improvement studies of a section of an industrial production system within manufacturing industry, which are to be analyzed through modeling and simulation
Tuition
Lectures, seminars, laboratory work and industry applied project work.
Specific requirements
Completed courses of at least 30 credits, on advanced level, in Product and Process Development.
Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given in entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
Written assignment (INL1), 3 credits, examines the learning objectives 1-5, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
Written assignment (INL2), 3 credits, examines the learning objectives 5-8, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
Seminar (SEM1), 1.5 credits, examines the learning objectives 4 och 8, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
Grade
Pass with distinction, Pass with credit, Pass, Fail
Interim Regulations and Other Regulations
The course overlaps with 6 credits towards KPP319 Industrial Excellence.
