Objectives
The objective of the module Narration: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy is to give students the opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge in English literature and the teaching of literature, with special focus on narrative theory and storytelling in the classroom. The objective of the module Translation: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy is to give students the opportunity to acquire a basic knowledge of translation theory and practice, with special focus on the relevance of translation, and its potential applications in the foreign language classroom.
Learning outcomes
This course consists of two modules:
- Narration: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy
- Translation: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy.
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
Narration: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy
1. explain the key concepts in narrative theory and related fields
2. read, analyze, and discuss narrative literature and narrative theory
3. apply narrative theory and methods of literary analysis to literary texts
4. plan and write an argumentative essay supported by narrative theory
5. reflect on, and demonstrate in practice, how storytelling can be used to promote students' creative abilities, as well as their oral and written skills, in English
6. integrate storytelling in the planning of teaching
Translation: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy
7. explain the key concepts in translation studies, as well as the principles and processes applied in translation
8. discuss specific issues arising in translation in various contexts, for example in fiction, poetry, film, and technology, as well as interpreting
9. identify and reflect on grammatical, lexical and other linguistic differences between languages
10. translate between Swedish and English in accordance with specified requirements regarding closeness and level of formality
11. critically analyze and evaluate their own and others' translations, among other things with regard to linguistic correctness, genre, level of style, cultural context, and the purpose of the target text
12. reflect on and practically demonstrate how translation can be used to promote student learning, including insights regarding linguistic similarities and differences, as well as oral and written skills in English
13. integrate translation and translations in the planning of teaching
Course content
Narration: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy:
- English-language literary works in different genres
- English-language literature and literature teaching, with special focus on narrative theory and storytelling in the classroom
- field studies
Translation: Theory, Practice and Pedagogy:
- Introduction to translation studies
- Translation theory and practice, with special focus on English as the source or target language, and with regard to different types of text
- Translation as a method in foreign language teaching
- Field studies
Tuition
Teaching and learning take place in the form of lectures, seminars, home assignments, and field studies, and are based to a significant extent on ICT.
Specific requirements
179.5 credits from the study program for upper-secondary subject teachers, including 37.5 credits from the educational science courses (of which 3 credits for the ‘PM’ in research methods), 15 credits of placement practice, 52.5 credits in English (of which 30 credits from English 1 and 2), and a total of 60 credits in the major subject.
Examination
NÄR1, Compulsory attendance at all scheduled teaching and learning activities: Narration in theory, practice and school, 1 credit, regarding learning outcomes 1-3 and 5-6, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
NÄR2, Compulsory attendance at all scheduled teaching and learning activities: Translation in theory, practice and school, 1 credit, regarding learning outcomes 7-13, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL1, Course portfolio: Narration in theory, practice and school, 5 credits, regarding learning outcomes 1-5, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL2, Field study: Narration in theory, practice and school, 1.5 credits, regarding learning outcomes 1-5, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL3, Spoken and written assignments: Translation in theory, practice and school, 4 credits, regarding learning outcomes 7-13, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL4, Field study: Translation in theory, practice and school, 1.5 credits, regarding learning outcomes 12-13, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
SEM1, Translation test: Translation in theory, practice and school, 1 credit, regarding learning outcomes 10-11, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
To receive the grade Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student needs to have earned that grade on at least 9 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
