Literature lists
Course literature is preliminary up to 8 weeks before course start. Course literature can be valid over several semesters.
Objectives
The course shall:
- Give deeper knowledge in a mathematical subject
- Develop the ability to formulate a problem and to work independently
- Develop the ability to present knowledge and the results obtained in speech and writing.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student should be able to
- independently, in writing and orally, present the basics of the problem area and solution methodology and the results obtained in the completed project
- Present all relevant literature and other sources used in the project and clearly and accurately refer to this information in the written report
- If the project is applied conduct computer-based experimental studies with data, models, algorithms, and software, and present the results graphically and numerically in tables, as well as comment and draw conclusions from the results
- Prepare and implement a well-structured and clear oral seminar presentation of the results of the project
- Describe how the work done relates to previous works in the area and what significance the work done has and to which extent the project has brought new knowledge in the area
Course content
The larger part of this course is an independent study which shall be done individually or in groups. A supervisor is appointed to every student or group. The work shall be described in a written work plan which shall be approved by the supervisor who is also course examiner. The work shall be presented both in a written report and orally at a seminar, which shall be announced at least fourteen days in advance. In addition to the independent work the course may contain literature searches, literature studies and seminars. The extent of such work shall be presented in the work plan.
Tuition
Establishing of a plan, which is signed by the student(s) and supervisor(s), outlining the process and a time schedule for it. Continuous supervision of one or several supervisors.
Specific requirements
A completed degree project 15 credits on the basic level in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and non-overlapping courses in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics with a total sum of at least 90 credits, excluding previous degree projects, of which at least 15 credits must relate to courses at advanced level.
Examination
UPS1, Degree project including oral presentation, 15 credits, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

Interim Regulations and Other Regulations
The student is entitled to a maximum of 35 hours of supervision. When two students carry out a joint degree project the total time used for supervision (regardless if it concerns one of the students or both) is a maximum of 55 hours.
The maximum number of times that a student can take an examination is five.
