Course syllabus - Applied Operations Research and Logistics

Objectives

The aim of the course is to give knowledge of mathematical modeling of industrial and logistics problems and provide the basic knowledge about the theory and application of Operations Research techniques. Moreover, to introduce students to use quantitative and qualitative methods and techniques for effective decision making, model formulation and application that are used in solving production and logistic decision problems. The course aims to provide the students with the opportunity of using various software package for solving linear programing and decision making.

Learning outcomes

After completied the course, the student shall be able to:

1. describe production and logistics planning through a broad range of examples,
2. build models to specific production and logistics problems,
3. analyze and evaluate the solution from a production and logistics problem,
4. utilize operations research techniques in optimizing production and logistics problems,
5. produce mathematical formulations of production and logistics problems and
6. use optimization software.

Course content

Operations Research is concerned with application of mathematical modeling of problems arising in the management and operation of systems of human beings, machines, materials and money in industry, business...etc. The purpose is to help management to determine its policy and actions. Techniques of operations research considered are:
-Introduction to operation research
-Linear programming, (LP), LP and allocation of resources, Graphical LP solution
-Simplex algorithm and Duality
-Sensitivity analysis
-Transportation and assignment problems
-Decision making and analysis
-Non linear programming

Tuition

The teaching will essentially include classroom lectures and group work.
 
 

Specific requirements

Production and Logistics Planning 7.5 hp on advanced level. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

Examination

Written assignment (INL1), 2,5 credits, (examines the learning outcomes 2-5), marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
Examination (TEN1), 5 credits, (examines the learning outcomes 1-4), marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
