Objectives
The course provides extended knowledge in a current issue related to research and development in the energy area, both financially and technically. The course will create an understanding of and practical application of theories and models for the analysis of energy markets, and develop the student's individual abilities regarding: written and oral presentations, critical analysis of information, working in group, planning and execution of a task during a limited time frame.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to:
- identify issues related to the energy market and the need for further knowledge in the field;
- apply theories and models for solving problems related to energy markets;
- integrate knowledge from different disciplines (financial and technical) and to analyze and understand complex relationships;
- analyze and critically evaluate an issue linked to the energy market;
- to clearly communicate and present conclusions and methods;
- make assessments of various strategic solutions for the energy market and their capabilities and limitations in terms of development;
- relate the current research and development efforts to the study question;
- work in group to collectively achieve the set project objectives;
Course content
A larger project task is carried out within the group, containing a current issue in the field of energy markets. The project task contains one or more of the following phases: investigation, computation/simulation/optimization and analysis of results. The course focuses on combining knowledge within the corporate and national economic field along with knowledge in the technical field, such as how elements from these different areas interact in pricing or contributes to constraints and opportunities in the electricity market.
Tuition
Lectures, project, tutorial. The course uses a pedagogical (Web-based) platform for communication, discussion and presentation of course materials.
Specific requirements
120 credits completed courses in business, economics, science and/or engineering, including 15 credits at advanced level. Of these, 65 credits must be in business/economics or energy engineering including the courses Perspectives on energy markets 15 credits, Business on Global Markets 7.5 credits and Microeconomics 7.5 credits, or equivalent. Qualifying courses that shall have been studied are Process simulation 7.5 credits and Process Modelling 7.5 credits, or similar courses. In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 2 and English course A/English course 2 are required. In cases where the course is given in english, exemption from the Swedish B/Swedish 2 is given.
Examination

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
