Objectives
The course objective is that students will acquire the ability to apply fundamental principles, processes and models for designing interactive systems and digital artifacts so that people have the benefit and enjoyment of them. The course will also awaken reflection around sustainable development, social and ethical aspects during design and development of new technologies.
Learning outcomes
Student should be able to:
- demonstrate the ability to apply the design process for the design of interactive digital artifacts
- demonstrate the ability to conduct user studies to evaluate a design
- demonstrate - through literature studies, references and practical work - how a design work is based on scientific contribution in the field
- design and develop interactive prototypes and digital artifacts
- present and discuss information, problems and solutions in dialogue with different groups verbally and in writing
- the ability to make judgments with regard to sustainable development and scientific, social and ethical issues in interaction design
Course content
This course focuses on the design process for interactive systems. How they should be designed and developed to enable communication between system and user functions in a desirable and expected manner. Methods of interaction: design methods in creative phase, concept development, interaction techniques and evaluation techniques are presented and applied. The course includes practical design work in exercises and projects. The course presents ethical aspects, social aspects and sustainable development within interaction design. The course also includes academic writing in the field and provides an overview of current research in the area.
Tuition
The course includes lectures, exercises, individual assignment and group project work.
Requirements
Mathematics C or Mathematics 3b/3c
Examination
Exercise (INL1), 2.5 ECTS credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
Project (PRO1), 5 ECTS credits, marks 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
