Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to attain enhanced knowledge of the language, history, culture and society of the Nordic countries, especially Sweden.
Learning outcomes
After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:
-identify and name concepts of Swedish grammar and phonology in a detailed way
-apply substantial knowledge of Swedish grammar and phonetics to advanced language production
-engage in conversation and write coherent texts in correct Swedish
-read, understand and analyse different types of texts in advanced Swedish
-describe a selection of aspects related to Nordic history and recent Nordic literature
-plan and carry out a scientific project which shows specialized knowledge in written Swedish
Course content
Course module 1: Language theory, 3 credits
This course deals with descriptive and prescriptive Swedish grammar and phonetics.
Course module 2: Oral presentation, 5 credits
This course deals with different oral presentation situations, preparation, structure, adaption to the audience, argument and the use of aids.
Course module 3: Written communication, 5 credits
This course deals with different writing situations, text types, the writing process, structure, adapting to the reader, and using reference literature/dictionaries.
Course module 4: Nordic history, 6.5 credits
The course includes studies in the history of the Nordic countries in terms of politics, society, economy and culture, with a particular emphasis on Sweden and Swedish conditions.
Course module 5: Recent Nordic literature, 6.5 credits
The course includes studies in Nordic literature from the advent of modernism up until today with a focus on Swedish literature. A number of representative novels and poems and one play will be read and analysed.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

A passing grade for the course modules Language theory, Oral production, Written production, Recent Nordic literature and Project is the equivalent of Swedish B qualifications from upper secondary school.
