Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to attain enhanced knowledge of and skills in the language, history, culture and society of the Nordic countries, especially Sweden.
Learning outcomes
After having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:
-identify and name concepts of Swedish grammar and phonology
-apply their knowledge of Swedish grammar and phonetics to effective language production
-engage in conversation and write coherent texts in Swedish
-read, understand and analyse different types of Swedish texts
-describe a selection of aspects related to Swedish literature, history, society and culture on a basic level
Course content
Course module 1: Language theory, 6 credits
This course deals with the structure and characteristics of Swedish and provides specialised knowledge required for reasoning about language issues.
Course module 2: Written communication, 7 credits
This course offers practice in reading and writing skills in relation to different types of texts in Swedish as well as using dictionaries and other aids.
Course module 3: Oral presentation, 7 credits
This course offers practice in oral presentation in Swedish and promotes students’ ability to understand spoken Swedish.
Course module 4: Swedish literature, 3 credits
The course includes studies in Swedish literature.
Course module 5: Swedish history, society and culture, 3 credits
The course includes studies in Swedish history, society and culture.
Course module 6: Project, 4 credits
The course spans the entire semester, and knowledge acquired in the other course modules is used to write a project paper.

To obtain a Pass with Distinction on the course a Pass with Distinction is required with at least 22 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
