Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide deep knowledge in risk management in the fields of building technology or quality management. The course will also provide knowledge in how to avoid unplanned events which could cause damage to man, environment or property.
Learning outcomes
After completed the course the student shall be able to
- apply different methods to make a risk analysis
- categorize and analyze risks and apply methods of risk analysis in their proper context
- from a wide perspective analyze risks, evaluate needs of measures and communicate the needs
- explain concepts and problems in this technical field
- independently design and perform a project comprising concepts and problems in this field
Course content
Risk analysis methods. Principles of risk evaluation in enterprises and society. Responsibilities of different parties and coordination between public authorities, municipalities and enterprises. Examples of accidents. Risk management from a perspective of society. Risk communication. Risk perception.

Specific requirements
90 credits completed courses within an engineering program or within engineering whereof at least 7 credits on level G2F. Qualifying course that shall have been studied is Probability and statistical theory 7.5 credits. In addition Swedish B/Swedish 2 and English A/English 5 are required. In cases where the course is given in English, exemption from the Swedish B/Swedish 2 is given.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
