Objectives
The purpose of the course is for the student to acquire basic knowledge of the Public Health Sciences along with knowledge of conducting health-promoting work in society.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1 Account for basic epidemiological concepts with applications on the determining factors of health and common diseases
2 Account for central concepts and strategies in the Public Health Sciences
3 Describe the determining factors of health at individual, group, organisational and societal levels
4 Describe public health issues in relation to the concept of sustainable development in a global and historical perspective
5 Account for the inequality in health between different population groups
6 Account for health-, protection- and risk factors in health and describe similarities and differences between health-promoting and illness prevention work
7 Describe central actors and arenas of public health work at different levels
8 Describe the values and ethical aspects of public health work in promotion and prevention work
9 Account for health-promoting and illness prevention interventions at individual, group and societal levels
10 Describe methods of measuring and evaluating the effects of interventions at individual, group and societal levels
Course content
Epidemiological measurements (incidence, prevalence, absolute and relative risk)
Common diseases
Factors influencing health in the population - gender, ethnicity, socioeconomics, life style and surroundings
The influence on health of economic, environmental and social factors
Public health in practice in a local, regional, national and international perspective along with examples from the surrounding community
Health-promotion and illness prevention perspectives
Ethical aspects of health-promotion and illness prevention actions
Examples of methods of measuring and evaluating the effects of interventions at individual, group and societal levels
Tuition
The course is taught by means of lectures, a seminar and field studies, with studies of the structure of an organisation or authority, appropriate policy documents for the workplace, documentation and reports from the field studies.
Specific requirements
Full Credits from the two first years in DDBNP at Rangsit University and a TOEFL test result, minimum score cBt 173, pBT 500 or iBT 61 or IELTS score 5,0 and no band score below 4,5 or CU-TEP with a minimum of 535.
Examination
Exercise (GRU1), 6 credits, group work with written and oral report in a seminar. Learning objectives 4-6. Marks Pass (G).
Exercise (INL1), 3.5 credits, individual written assignment. Learning objectives 4-10. Marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Training (PRA1), 3 credits, attendance at field studies. Learning objective 7. Marks Pass (G).
Examination (TEN1), 2.5 credits, individual written examination. Learning objectives 1-3. Marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a Pass with Distinction on the course, a Pass with Distinction is required on TEN1 and INL1. For further details consult the Study Guide.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
